Back in 2005...
I started Slate back in 2005 originally as a laundry and dry cleaning pickup service. I just didn’t like the way my clothes were being cleaned and I thought I could offer a better experience. I would pick up clothes on my bicycle, take them to a dry cleaning partner and bring them back packaged really nicely. After a few months I got to buy our first used delivery van, a used Mercedes Sprinter with like 100,000 miles on it. After we were features in Daily Candy (remember the Daily Candy days?) our business blew up.
We built our first dry cleaning facility at 96 Morton Street, in the far West Village, back when that area was full of art galleries. It was a really lovely place. Rent the Runway actually started out from our space, when Jen and Jenny (the RTR founders) needed a dry cleaning partner.
